The pace varies by individual, but incremental increases of 50–100 calories per week allow hormonal signaling to adjust alongside intake.
Protein prioritization during recovery is critical. Adequate protein intake supports muscle preservation and synthesis, and muscle tissue is metabolically active — it raises your resting metabolic rate over time. Aim for consistent protein across meals rather than backloading it.
Resistance training is the most reliable way to rebuild metabolic capacity. Muscle is the engine of your metabolism, and adding or maintaining lean mass is one of the few proven ways to meaningfully increase your basal metabolic rate over the long term.
Sleep and stress management aren't optional add-ons — they're foundational to hormonal recovery. Leptin is primarily secreted during sleep, and cortisol regulation depends on consistent sleep cycles. If you're cutting calories and skimping on sleep, you're working against your own recovery.
Targeted nutritional support can help fill the gaps that years of restriction may have created. Zinc, selenium, iodine, and iron all play roles in thyroid hormone production and conversion.
